Discriminate clearly between hotels and home Bed and Breakfasts.
Do not discriminate against larger home properties forcing them to close by demanding alterations costing tens of thousands of pounds thus ruining the home and forcing it to become a hotel.
Stop making an appeal to a Magistrates Court the only option following an Enforcement Order. The Magistrates have no knowledge of Fire Law and seek advice from the Fire Authority who are themselves on trial. This is a GROSS MISJUSTICE. Appoint an Ombudsman or independent panel.
Make the distance from the bed to the exit realistic – at present 12 meters.
Make the Fire Authority responsible for giving advise. (The Fire Authority say they can see a practical solution to our problem but are unable to tell us – and so close us down.
Keep fireman who have been recruited and have the ability to fight fires fighting fires. They do not seem to have the ability to see the whole picture despite training and go for the easy option of closing premises.

Why is it important?
Because so many homes offering reasonably priced Bed and Breakfast are being made to close. This is having an adverse effect on local tourism, businesses, weddings, funerals and events as well as relatives visiting Universities etc.
The Order is badly written and capable of widely different interpretation.
The Booklet offers suggestions to home Bed and Breakfasts and small business owners but can be totally ignored by the Fire Officers.
Fire Officers will give little help but insist on getting professional advice from ‘Fire Consultants’ these turn out to be ex-firemen who charge hundreds of pounds sometimes for inappropriate suggestions.
To make an appeal against an Enforcement Order costs thousands of pounds and is doomed from the start since the Advisors to the Magistrates are the Fire Officers who are themselves on trial. Having failed one then has to pay an additional many thousands of pounds for the Fire Authorities expenses. THIS IS A NATIONAL DISGRACE and brings the law into disrespect.
